Five Elements of Good Design

There are over 50 million websites on the internet and new pages are added every day. If you want your website to stand out from competitors and be visible on the internet, it should be appealing to users and conform to professional design standards. Whether your website is for commercial use or personal, following the essential elements and principles in web design will help you to build a website that can drive results and has the ability to meet your objectives. By addressing the essential issues, you can ensure your website is able to make its mark.

You should consider a combination of factors when building your website. The presentation and layout of individual web pages contributes to the overall quality of your website.

1. Well Balanced Design (Consistent design)

The choice of colours or lay-out should all follow the fundamental theories of Web design in order to strike the right balance between the elements. The three main types of balance that you should focus on as you design your website are listed below:

Consistency in web design can be achieved across the entire website by placing all the design elements in an even fashion. E.g. a heavy element on the left is matched with another lighter on the right. However the elements should not be exactly the same, because that would make your web page design look stale or boring.

Developing a website with an inconsistent design on the other hand can be damaging for your website and your brand. Consistency should be, maintained within a particular web page and also across the entire website. Consistency includes the right image positioning, combination of colours, texture and overall layout. The result of a consistent design can be a visually appealing and pleasing website.

2. Contrast

Contrast is one of the most essential principles in design. Use of dark font on a light background or vice versa is a common technique that is known to improve the legibility of the content and improves the overall usability of the website. In web design you can also take advantage of contrast without overloading your readers with a loud contrasting colour scheme. You can take full advantage of contrast by changing font size, weight and font family to provide textual contrast and varying sizes of images and elements.

3. Emphasis

One of the biggest mistakes with websites is not being able to provide focus important elements on the website. You should stay away from trying to provide focus on too many elements at once. To try to have everything in the design stand out is a common mistake that can have a negative impact on the overall appeal of the website. When everything has equal emphasis at best it can make the design look busy and cluttered. This in-turn can make the design appear boring and uninspiring.

To create a visual clarity in web design, it is important to place emphasis only on the right elements. There are many ways to do this. Changing the font size or image size in order to put more emphasis or less emphasis on elements is one such way to achieve this. Another example is the use of contrasting colours for added emphasis.

4. Rhythm

You can bring much needed internal consistency into your website through repetition. You can repeat your headline for a few times, repeat the same image across the page, create a background that is arranged and tiled with repetitive designs, or repeat a particular passion to provide site design consistency. You should be careful not to over it though.

5. Unity

Adjust the layout of your elements to arrange them close or far away from each another. In the extract of your page, you can change the specification around the text in your page contents. You can further achieve unity by playing around the box properties and change the margins and padding.
